Abstract: A system (100) and method (200) for remote management of a network unit (102) from a central communication unit (104) over an optical communication link (106) is disclosed. The method begins with generating management data using a packet-based management protocol received through an Ethernet interface (108), and data is routed within central communication unit (104) using an internal Ethernet switch (110) based on network addressing. The routed management data is converted into optical management signals at a dedicated management wavelength using an Ethernet-over-fiber media converter (112). The optical management signals are multiplexed with payload optical signals through wavelength division multiplexing and transmitted over the optical communication link (106). At network unit (102), signals are demultiplexed, converted into electrical management data, and supplied to a control unit (118) for monitoring and configuration. Response management data is transmitted back to central communication unit (104), enabling bidirectional remote management without interrupting payload transmission.
