MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641109282 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Science on September 11, 2026, for Method For Recycling Heterochain Polymers And Polymer Products Derived Therefrom.

Inventors include A. Moulishwar Reddy; Akshay Sunil Salvi; Vimal Kumar S; Sampath Parasuram; Prof. Subodh Kumar; and Prof. Suryasarathi Bose.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: A method for recycling a heterochain polymer is disclosed. The method comprises subjecting a reaction medium comprising the heterochain polymer, a zinc salt catalyst, and water to hydrothermal treatment at a temperature in a range of about 180°C to about 300°C under elevated pressure to obtain a depolymerization product. The heterochain polymer is selected from a polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a polyurethane, an aliphatic polyamide, and an epoxy polymer. The depolymerization product comprises a plurality of monomeric and oligomeric species derived from the heterochain polymer. The depolymerization product is subsequently reacted with (i) a monomer or (ii) a polymer comprising one or more reactive functional groups selected from hydroxyl, amine, carboxylic acid, isocyanate, epoxy, acid chloride, anhydride groups, and combinations thereof to obtain a polymer product. The method enables chemical recycling and upcycling of heterochain polymers into new polymeric materials. FIG. 1
