MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611092520 A) filed by Chandigarh University on July 30, 2026, for Method For Producing Biodiesel From Waste Cooking Oil Using Ethanol.
Inventors include Dr. Saubhagya Ranjan Mahapatra; and Linda Taban Alfayo.
The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil using ethanol as a transesterification alcohol. The method comprises pretreating waste cooking oil by removing impurities and moisture, preparing an ethanol-catalyst mixture, and reacting the pretreated waste cooking oil under transesterification conditions to produce fatty acid ethyl esters. Upon completion of the reaction, glycerol followed by water is sequentially added to the reaction mixture to promote efficient phase separation of a biodiesel-rich phase from a glycerol-rich phase. The biodiesel-rich phase is separated, washed and dried to obtain purified biodiesel. The method enhances phase separation in ethanol-based biodiesel production, improves biodiesel recovery and product purity, eliminates the use of toxic methanol, utilizes waste cooking oil as a sustainable feedstock, and provides an environmentally friendly, economical and industrially scalable process for biodiesel production.
