Abstract: The present invention relates to an environmentally sustainable photocatalytic nanocomposite and a method for preparing the same for wastewater treatment comprising recovering copper from electronic waste, preparing a copper precursor solution, and synthesizing copper oxide (Cu2O/Cu) nanoparticles using an aqueous Plumeria obtusa extract as a green reducing and stabilizing agent. Waste polystyrene is sulfonated to form a porous sulfonated waste polystyrene (SWPS) matrix, into which the Cu2O/Cu nanoparticles are uniformly immobilized to obtain a Cu2O/Cu/SWPS nanocomposite. The obtained Cu2O/Cu/SWPS nanocomposite exhibits enhanced adsorption-assisted visible-light photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants, improved nanoparticle dispersion, reduced agglomeration, high structural stability, and excellent recoverability and reusability.
