Abstract: In a method for operating an internal combustion engine, it is proposed that at least in the first operating state of the gas sensor (30), at least intermittently, a third quantity (54) is determined which characterizes a difference between the first quantity (40) and the second quantity (44). From third quantity (54), at least intermittently and at least essentially continuously, a correction quantity (56) is determined. The second quantity (44) is obtained by correcting the output value (46) of the model (48) using the correction quantity (56) such that value of third quantity (54) becomes smaller. The second quantity (44) obtained by the correction of the output value (46) of the model (48) is then used as the quantity that quantitatively characterizes the gas fraction contained in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine, at least when the gas sensor (30) is not in the first operating state.
