MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641106880 A) filed by Dr. Subathra Radhakrishnan; Dr. Catherine Ann Martin; and Prof. Mohamed Rela on September 03, 2026, for Method For Generating Three-Dimensional Self-Organizing Liver Organoids From Infrapatellar Fat Pad–derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells.
Inventor includes Dr. Subathra Radhakrishnan.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for generating a three-dimensional self-organizing liver organoid from infrapatellar fat pad-derived mesenchymal stem cells (IFP- MSCs). The method comprises pre-processing harvested infrapatellar fat pad tissue, isolating and expanding IFP-MSCs, segregating the cells into three populations, differentiating a first population into hepatocyte-like cells through sequential hepatic induction and maturation, differentiating a second population into endothelial-like cells under endothelial culture conditions, and maintaining a third population as mesenchymal stem cells. The cell populations are co-cultured in predefined cellular ratios within a mixed organoid culture medium to promote spontaneous three-dimensional self-organization into structurally integrated liver organoids. The method further enables modulation of hepatocyte-to-biliary lineage dynamics through Notch signaling induction. The resulting organoids exhibit interconnected architecture, prolonged structural viability, sustained albumin production, bile secretion, cytochrome P450 3A4 activity, urea synthesis, glycogen storage, and endothelial-driven structural integration for applications in disease modelling, drug screening, regenerative medicine, and liver tissue engineering.
