Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method for manufacturing a functionally graded metallic component using a directed metal deposition system (100). The method comprises depositing a first metallic material to form a first metallic region (202), depositing a second metallic material to form a second metallic region (206), and depositing a plurality of intermediate compositionally graded transition layers (204) between the first metallic region (202) and the second metallic region (206). A controller (108) regulates operation of a laser source (102) and a powder delivery assembly (104) to progressively vary material composition across the transition layers (204), thereby establishing a gradual compositional transition that facilitates metallurgical bonding while reducing brittle phase formation and interface-related defects. In one embodiment, the first metallic material comprises stainless steel 316L and the second metallic material comprises Inconel 625. FIG. 2
