MUMBAI, India, Oct. 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641121083 A) filed by Rajalakshmi Engineering College on October 09, 2026, for Method For Estimating Subsurface Soil Properties Using Termite Mound Imagery.

Inventor includes Dr. M. Thangamani.

The application for the patent was published on October 23, 2026, under issue no. 43/2026.

Abstract: A method and system for estimating subsurface soil geochemical properties using smartphone-based computer vision analysis of termite mound surface imagery. The system exploits natural bioturbation by mound-building termites, which excavate soil from 0.5 to 5 meters depth during construction. A smartphone capture module (100) photographs the mound surface alongside a physical color reference card (120) for illumination normalization. A preprocessing unit (200) applies perspective and color 695 correction producing device-independent CIE Lab* representations. A feature extraction pipeline (300) extracts color, texture, and structural features from the calibrated image. A species identification module (400) classifies the termite species to determine excavation depth. A trained regional multi-output regression model (510) estimates subsurface parameters including pH, iron oxide, clay percentage, clay mineral type, calcium carbonate, organic carbon, and cation exchange capacity with confidence intervals. 700 The system operates on-device without interne connectivity. A crowdsourced platform (700) aggregates GPS-tagged analyses to generate interpolated regional subsurface soil quality maps.
