Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining the state of a slide ring seal on the basis of a hierarchical model structure, comprising the method steps of: a. detecting at least one operating parameter characterising the operating conditions of the slide ring seal, b. predicting a heat source and/or leak and/or temperature in the contact region of the slide ring seal using a plurality of models, including a tribological model of the slide ring seal with the detected operating parameters as input variables and/or one or more tribological properties of the slide ring seal, and a thermofluidic and/or thermostructural model of the slide ring seal together with thermally relevant periphery, c. dynamically reconstructing the contact state of the slide ring seal and/or the temperature profile in the sealing contact using a thermofluidic and/or thermostructrual model of the slide ring seal with the predicted heat source and/or or leak, and a temperature, T_mate, measured at a component of the slide ring seal.
