MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531027535 A) filed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited on March 25, 2025, for Method For A Steam Turbine Start-Up Without Availability Of Temperature Measurement In Intermediate-Pressure Turbine.

Inventor includes Swapan Kumar Bhattacharyya.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method for a steam turbine start-up without availability of Metal temperature measurement in intermediate-pressure (IP) turbine. It estimates the IP shaft mid-wall temperature using correlations with the high-pressure (HP) shaft temperature. The process involves determining startup conditions by measuring the HP shaft temperature, selecting optimal main steam (MS) and hot reheat (HRH) steam temperatures, and ensuring key thermal criteria (X2, X4, X5) are met before opening control valves. The turbine is first brought to warm-up speed, where additional criteria (X7A, X7B) are fulfilled before accelerating to rated speed. By maintaining HRH temperature, the remaining criteria (X7C, X8C) are deemed satisfied, allowing a safe and controlled turbine startup without direct IP Metal temperature monitoring. Figure 1:
