MUMBAI, India, June 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511042344 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Kanpur on May 01, 2025, for Method And System To Carbonate Steel Slag For Carbon Dioxide Storage And Produce A Silicate Fertilizer.

Inventor includes Ragipani, Raghavendra.

The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.

Abstract: A method and system (500) to carbonate steel slag for carbon dioxide storage and produce a silicate fertilizer is provided. The method utilizes hot steel slag and captures carbon dioxide using an easy to recycle solvent mixture. The method achieves rapid carbonation rates and higher carbonation efficiency than existing processes. The system (500) involves a chemical pretreatment unit (001), a leaching tower (004), a quench tower (006), and a slurry carbonation unit (007) to transform CO2-rich flue gas into stable carbonates. The disclosure helps mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by capturing CO2 from industrial flue gases, contributing to climate change mitigation and compliance with environmental regulations. The resulting mineralized products, such as precipitated calcium carbonates, have commercial value and can be used in various industries such as construction, paper, plastics, thereby generating potential revenue and enhancing economic feasibility.
