Abstract: Metal produced by smelting or refining, which may include material from more than one original source combined prior to or during the operation, is assessed for consistency with a declared source. Trace-element concentrations and isotopic ratios are measured in a sample of the processed metal. A process transformation representing effects of the smelting or refining operation on trace-element and isotopic signatures is applied to signatures of candidate original sources to derive an expected post-process signature for each candidate source. The expected signatures are used together in an inverse estimation operating on the measured trace-element and isotopic data to determine a relative contribution of each candidate source to the sample, with uncertainty arising from the process transformation propagated into the resulting contribution estimates. The estimated source contributions are compared with the declared source associated with the sample, and an output is produced indicating either an inconsistency between the estimated contributions and the declared source or insufficient measurement evidence to establish such an inconsistency Total Number of Words: 162 words
