Abstract: The present disclosure describes an in vitro method and a system for detecting the presence or quantitating the population of a microorganism in a sample. The method comprises: mixing a test sample with a culture medium and applying culturing conditions which allow the generation of at least one volatile metabolic product by the microorganism; detecting said volatile metabolic product, if generated, by a change? which said product induces in an electrical, magnetic or electromagnetic property of a gas-detecting device; and obtaining the result of said change of property of the gas-detecting device as an indication of the absence or the presence or the population of the microorganism in the culture medium or the sample. The system comprises: a gas-detecting device arranged to detect at least one metabolic product by the change which said metabolic product induces in the property of the gas-detecting device, the changed property being selected from the group consisting of an electrical property, a magnetic property, and an electromagnetic property, and generating a signal when a threshold value is crossed, thereby indicating the absence, the presence or the population of the microorganism.
