Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method and system for monitoring solar irradiance on photovoltaic cells (solar panel). The method comprises acquiring, by a microcontroller (400), ambient temperature (T) and humidity (H) measurements corresponding to an environment of a photovoltaic panel (100), and periodically obtaining a short-circuit current measurement by operating the photovoltaic panel (100) in a short-circuit mode through a solid-state relay (300). The acquired short-circuit current, temperature, and humidity measurements are provided as input parameters to a surrogate regressor function (502) stored in a memory (500) and executable by the microcontroller (400). The surrogate regressor function is derived from outputs of a gradient boosting regressor model trained using historical datasets including short-circuit current, temperature, humidity, and corresponding reference irradiance data obtained from an irradiance sensor. The surrogate regressor function processes the input parameters to estimate a solar irradiance value, which is output for real-time irradiance monitoring. The invention enables accurate, low-cost, and computationally efficient irradiance estimation while eliminating the need for dedicated irradiance sensing hardware in real-time environmental monitoring.
