MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541031202 A) filed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited on March 29, 2025, for Method And System For High-Density Methane Storage At Moderate Pressures.

Inventors include Mishra, Prashant; Konni, Madhavi; Palaparthi, Neehar; Tompala, Annaji Rajiv Kumar; Raman, Ravishankar; and Muralidharan, M..

The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.

Abstract: The invention discloses a method for high-density methane storage at moderate pressures by filling a modular tank system with methane gas at moderate pressures, wherein, modular tank system comprises a cylinder filled with an adsorbent material. The adsorbent material is selected from activated carbon-1 and activated carbon-2. The activated carbon-1 has physical properties consisting of surface area in a range of 2200-2800 (m2.g-1), pore volume in a range of 1.4-1.8 (cm3.g-1) and Bulk Density in a range of 0.22-0.28 (g.cm-3). Activated carbon-1 has a higher methane storage capacity of 1.7 times of an empty cylinder at 70 bar. The activated carbon-2 has physical properties consisting of surface area in a range of 1000-1400 (m2.g-1), pore volume in a range of 0.5-0.65 (cm3.g-1) and Bulk Density in a range of 0.4- 0.55 (g.cm-3). Activated carbon-2 has a higher methane storage capacity of 4.1 times of an empty cylinder at 10 bar.
