Abstract: ABSTRACT [0026] This paper presents fabrication and systematic characterization of zinc– fluorapatite (Zn–FAP) composites fabricated through the stir casting process. The aim was to describe the influence of fluorapatite reinforcement on the machinability, mechanical performance, and stability of the structure of the zinc matrix. Four compositions based on 0, 3, 5, and 7 wt.% FAP were prepared and subjected to thorough testing. Mechanical properties were evaluated by means of hardness, tensile, and wear resistance testing, and machinability was investigated by controlled cutting tests. Microstructural characteristics, particle distribution, and possible secondary phase development were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The findings show a significant correlation between material behavior and FAP loading: moderate reinforcement levels (3–5 wt.%) led to improved wear resistance, hardness, and machining dimension stability, while excessive addition (7 wt.%) favored particle agglomeration and localized embrittlement. Such findings point to the need to optimize FAP concentration to achieve optimal strength, machinability, and microstructural integrity. In general, the research forms a scientific basis for customizing Zn–FAP composites as potential biodegradable orthopedic devices and lightweight structural parts.
