Abstract: An embodiment is a method performed by a wireless device to protect a media access control (MAC) header of a MAC protocol data unit (MPDU). The method includes encrypting a payload of the MPDU, generating first additional authentication data (AAD) based on concatenating a set of fields included in the MAC header and masking one or more bits included in the set of fields, generating a first authentication value based on the first AAD, generating second AAD based on one or more bits of the MAC header that do not contribute to the first AAD, generating a second authentication value based on the second AAD, and generating the MPDU, where the MPDU includes the MAC header, a first message integrity check (MIC) field that carries the first authentication value, and a second MIC field that carries the second authentication value. The method further includes transmitting the MPDU.
