MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641106168 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai on September 03, 2026, for Mechanically Adaptive Umbrella System For Redistributing Wind-Induced Forces.
Inventors include P. Manikandan; Anagh Vasishtha; and Hamza Hilal.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a mechanically adaptive umbrella system (100) for redistributing wind induced forces. The system (100) may include a central shaft (106) assembly (102) that connects a handle (104) to an adaptive tension canopy (110) through a central hub (108) and houses a rib deployment arrangement. Ribs (112) may extend radially from the central hub, each incorporating an axially compliant sliding segment (112-2) allowing controlled linear displacement under wind load. Torque-limiting rotational joints (114) may be disposed near the rib base, permitting limited angular rotation to act as mechanical stress relief points. The adaptive canopy enables slight deformation and temporary micro gap formation for pressure relief while maintaining rain protection. The sliding rib structure, rotational joints, and adaptive canopy operate in coordination to adapt mechanically to changing wind conditions, prevent inversion and structural damage, and maintain effective rain protection.
