MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541030074 A) filed by Carborundum Universal Limited on March 28, 2025, for Manufacture Of Feedstock Powders For Crack Tolerance Environmental Barrier Coatings.
Inventors include Nallendra Sengottaian Karthiselva; Sumin Kalarikunnil Mani; Jishnu Krishnan; Adith Harihara Subramanian; and Sivakumaran Maruvakkat Vasudevan.
The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a powder for forming a crack-resistant environmental barrier coating (EBC) involves mixing alumina, silica, zirconia, and yttria, melting the mixture by electric arc fusion, grinding the resulting ingot, spray drying the powder with additives including boehmite, micro silica, and carbon, and heat treating the spray-dried particles to induce carbon burnout and form nano-mullite needles. This process creates engineered porosity and a combination of mullite and yttria- stabilized zirconia (YSZ) in the final powder. The resulting EBC exhibits enhanced crack resistance and thermal shock resistance, extending component lifespan in high-temperature environments. The method allows for tailoring of composition and microstructure by adjusting material ratios, additives, and heat treatment parameters. Fig. 1
