Abstract: ABSTRACT A BioSafe Hypochlorite Waste Disinfection Unit for use in clinical and diagnostic laboratory environments is disclosed. The device comprises a sealed housing fabricated from chemicalresistant plastic (PP/HDPE) containing a sodium hypochlorite solution chamber, a perforated polypropylene basket for collecting and submerging biological waste including solids, tips, pipette tips, and other small biomedical waste during the disinfection process. A fixed lid incorporating a small drop opening is provided to minimize vapor release and limit occupational exposure to hypochlorite fumes during waste insertion. A maximum level indicator (MMO) is integrated into the container chamber to ensure the correct hypochlorite solution volume is maintained at all times. A lever handle connected to the basket via a lifting linkage enables the operator to raise the perforated basket above the solution level upon completion of the disinfection period, allowing the solution to drain back through the perforations into the chamber, facilitating safe and easy removal of disinfected waste without direct contact with the hypochlorite solution. The base of the housing further incorporates a hinged bottom door secured by a hinge lock, which remains locked in the closed position throughout the disinfection cycle to prevent leakage, and which can be released and locked open to enable controlled discharge of disinfected waste directly from the base of the unit. The device provides a closed, controlled, and cost-effective alternative to conventional open beaker disinfection methods, addressing occupational safety and biohazard waste management requirements in clinical and laboratory settings.
