Abstract: A system (100) and method (200) for protection of a transformer are disclosed. The system (100) comprises a signal acquisition module (102) configured to obtain current measurements associated with a transformer, a processing module (104) configured to generate a composite transient current signal (108), extract transient behaviour parameters (110), identify an operating condition (112), and generate a protection decision (114), and a relay interface (106) configured to control transformer protection. The processing module (104) segments the composite transient current signal (108) into analysis windows (116) and processes the transient behaviour parameters (110) using a feature processing module (138), clustering module (140), cluster interpretation module (142), and temporal persistence module (144). The method (200) comprises obtaining (202) current measurements, generating (204) the composite transient current signal, extracting (206) transient behaviour parameters (110), identifying (208) the operating condition, and generating (210) the protection decision.
