Abstract: The present invention discloses a low-cost colon metric detection system for identification of paraquat compounds in aqueous samples using ionic liquid capped cadmium-zinc-sulfide nanoparticles. The system comprises a reaction vessel, a heating arrangement, a nanoparticle precursor mixture, an ionic liquid medium, a nanoparticle sensing composition, a sample holding container, and a sunlight exposure region. The nanoparticle precursor mixture comprises a cadmium precursor source, a zinc precursor source, and a sulfur precursor source dispersed within the ionic liquid medium for synthesis of ionic liquid capped cadmium-zinc-sulfide nanoparticles. The nanoparticle sensing composition is prepared by dispersing synthesized nanoparticles in an alcohol medium for aqueous sensing applications. Upon addition of the nanoparticle sensing composition into an aqueous sample containing paraquat compounds and exposure to sunlight, photoexcited electrons generated from the nanoparticles interact with paraquat molecules to produce a visible blue color response. The disclosed sensing mechanism enables rapid and instrument-free detection of paraquat contamination within about two minutes. The invention provides selective sensing performance for environmental monitoring and field-level water analysis without electrical analytical equipment. Figure -1
