Abstract: TITLE OF INVENTION: LONG-RANGE SURVEILLANCE SMART CAMERA A method and a system (100) for image processing includes a capturing unit (200), memory (500), and a processing unit (600). The capturing unit (200) is configured to capture a thermal image and an RGB image. The processing unit (600), includes a calibration module (610), an I-map module (630), a fusion module (650), and a multi-foveation module (670). The calibration module (610) is configured to calibrate the capturing unit (200), providing a calibrated thermal image (611) and a calibrated visible (RGB) image (612). The I-map module (630) is configured to apply a plurality of heuristics on the calibrated thermal image (611) and provide an importance map I(x,y) 617. The fusion module (650) is configured to fuse the importance map I(x,y) 617 and the calibrated visible (RGB) image (612), resulting in an RGBI image (652) with high and low importance regions.
