Abstract: V2X communication will be an essential component of next generation intelligent transportation systems (ITS) as it enables vehicle to share safety information with other vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and traffic management systems. V2X provides many advantages to enhance road safety and improve traffic movement; however, because V2X uses open wireless communication and is subject to numerous security threats, V2X is at risk from attacks such as replay attacks and message spoofing. These attacks can introduce out-of-date or false information into the network, leading to poor decisions being made. This paper presents a lightweight, real- time protected framework for V2X communication where the focus is vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication and does not employ explicit machine learning techniques. The proposed framework utilizes real-time sensor data from an ESP32-based vehicle unit and structured message formats combined with timestamps for freshness checks in order to prevent replay attacks. Safety-related events (collision alerts, emergency events and overspeed warnings) are transmitted from the vehicle layer to an infrastructure server via socket-based communication. Based on experimental results, the proposed framework is appropriate for academic research and real- world ITS applications as it generates alerts in a timely and dependable manner.
