Abstract: A laser-based scintillometer system (100) and a method for measuring atmospheric turbulence in real-time is provided. The system (100) comprises a laser source (102), a beam expander (104), an atmospheric propagation path (106), a beam reducer (108), an imaging detector (110), and a processing unit (112). The laser source (102) produces a laser beam. The beam expander (104) increases a diameter of the laser beam prior to propagation through the atmospheric propagation path (106). The beam reducer (108) receives the propagated laser beam and reduces its diameter to a diameter suitable for acquisition by the imaging detector (110), which generates a set of full-field images. The processing unit (112) determines a first set of parameters from the full-field images, determines a second set of parameters related to the propagated laser beam, and determines a third set of parameters representative of a strength of atmospheric optical turbulence.
