Abstract: The current invention concerns a system for interacting with smart devices using an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled gesture recognition system. This invention provides an innovative way of controlling IoT enabled electronic devices through the use of natural hand gestures. The invention consists of a gesture sensing module, an embedded processing unit, gesture recognition module, a wireless communication module, and a smart device control module. To sense the gestures, an MPU6050 accelerometer and gyroscope sensor is used. The NodeMCU (ESP8266) microcontroller is used to preprocess the information captured by the sensor. The process involves the calibration of the sensors, removal of noise from the data, normalization of the data, and feature extraction. The gesture recognition algorithm analyses the data and identifies the predefined hand gestures depending on motion parameters such as acceleration, orientation, pitch, roll, and movement direction. Once the recognition is complete, the control command is communicated through a Wi-Fi communication network to the IoT enabled devices. These devices include lights, fans, television sets, air conditioning systems, and smart door locks. This system incorporates edge processing technology in order to cut down on communication latency, dependency on constant connection to the cloud and increase responsiveness in general. In addition, this system design allows incorporating machine learning based gesture recognition, secure wireless communication and connecting more smart devices using different communication protocols. This system is inexpensive, energy saving, scalable and user friendly, which makes it useful in increasing accessibility, convenience and hygiene due to contactless nature of interactions. This system can be used in smart houses, healthcare sector, industrial automation, educational facilities, offices and other IoT-based environments.
