Abstract: The present invention is related to IoT based Smart Traffic Red-Light Violation Detection and License Plate Tracking system using ESP32 with event-driven cloud monitoring and offers an intelligent, automatic, economic and efficient approach to address modern traffic violations. In the system, ESP32, IR sensors, ultrasonic sensors, ESP32-CAM, wireless communication, cloud computing, and CNN based Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) model are utilized for detection of red-light violations along with their license plates. For the detection of vehicle movement in front of red signal, IR sensors are used in the system, which detect movement at the stop line of vehicle, whereas ultrasonic sensor validates the vehicle's position. Once the violation is detected, ESP32 triggers the capturing of images and the captured image is pre processed through gray scale conversion, noise filtering, enhancement and contrast improvements before license plate recognition. The recognized registration number, captured image, timestamp, status of the traffic light and sensor data are combined to create a digital violation report. The proposed system differs from previous systems as the video stream to remote server is not continuous, and the event-driven communication is utilized where the communication happens only when the violation is occurred. The evidences are available for traffic authorities and can be easily used in electronic challan, vehicle registration system, and intelligent traffic management system. The modularity and scalability of the architecture can be easily extended to different intersections and also additional sensors, camera, communication medium, and artificial intelligence algorithm can be integrated to it. The experimental results demonstrate that the system is capable of reliably detecting the violation and identifying the vehicles as well as it reduces the false alarms due to multi-sensor validation and effective cloud communication. Thus, the invention offers a cost-effective and energy efficient traffic monitoring solution for smart cities, highways, educational institution, industrial campus, toll plazas, airports, and other intelligent transportation infrastructure.
