Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a system for controlling railway level crossing gates using IoT technology to increase safety and automation levels and improve efficiency of operations at the railway level crossings. The system consists of NodeMCU microcontroller, reed sensors for detecting the presence of trains, infrared sensors for detecting obstacles, geared DC motor for operating gates, railway track fault detector, warning LEDs and buzzers, and IoT communication module through Wi-Fi technology. The controller automatically detects arrival and departure of trains, operates gates, detects obstacles, detects track faults, and sends operational data to the cloud-based monitoring station. The experimental analysis revealed train detection efficiency at 97.8%, obstacle detection efficiency at 98.4%, average time response of the gate at 1.45 seconds, network reliability at 99.1% and communication range of 500 meters. The suggested invention is an effective and intelligent solution for ensuring railway crossing security by minimizing the role of people and facilitating the development of modern smart transportation infrastructure. Additionally, the application of Internet of Things technology ensures that the gate can be monitored and remotely controlled from a cloud platform by the responsible parties to monitor the gate, train and faults. The proposed gate is equipped with safety functions such as obstacle detection and fault detection. As seen from the experimental study, the suggested solution is an effective, efficient and scalable one.
