The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an Arduino-based Smart Ambulance Detection and Traffic Signal Control System using Radio Frequency (RF) communication to improve emergency vehicle mobility and reduce delays at traffic intersections. The system consists of an RF transmitter installed in the ambulance, an RF receiver connected to an Arduino microcontroller, and a traffic signal control unit. When an ambulance approaches an intersection, the transmitter sends a predefined identification signal to the receiver. The Arduino processes the received signal and initiates an emergency priority sequence by safely terminating the existing green phase, providing the required yellow interval, and stopping conflicting traffic movements. After an appropriate all-red clearance interval, the system activates the green signal for the designated ambulance approach while maintaining red signals for conflicting directions. A controlled priority duration and automatic restoration mechanism are incorporated to resume normal traffic operation after the emergency request is cleared. The system can be further enhanced with GPS tracking, IoT- based monitoring, and authenticated emergency vehicle identification. The proposed invention offers a cost-effective prototype for intelligent transportation systems, with the objective of reducing ambulance waiting time, improving emergency response efficiency, and supporting safer and more efficient urban traffic management.
