MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641113340 A) filed by Pavithra D; Manoj S; and Siva Sanjeev S on September 22, 2026, for Intelligent Wrong - Way Detection And Automated Retractable Road Barrier System.
Inventors include Pavithra D; Manoj S; and Siva Sanjeev S.
The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION (to be given along with complete specification on separate page) The _present invention=provides _&.system-for_detecting-and- responding-to vehiclesrtravelling against a permitted direction of traffic in controlled road sections. The system continuously monitors a road region using at least one sensing device and detects and tracks vehicles using image processing and computer-vision techniques. The movement of each tracked vehicle is analyzed across successive frames to determine its lane association, heading, direction, and trajectory relative to the permitted traffic flow. A wrong-way event is confirmed when the detected movement satisfies predefined temporal and trajectory conditions, thereby reducing false detection caused by stopped, reversing, turning, or temporarily misdirected vehicles. Following confirmation, the vehicle is classified and its authorization status is evaluated before any physical intervention. Authorized emergency vehicles and other permitted vehicles are provided unobstructed passage by maintaining the barrier in a retracted condition. For a confirmed unauthorized wrong-way vehicle, a dedicated safety controller evaluates vehicle presence, obstruction status, barrier position, actuator status, sensor health, manual override status, and other predefined safety conditions before permitting operation of the retractable barrier. The barrier is controlled through an actuator and monitored using position and movement feedback to verify its operating state and identify abnormal conditions. The system further incorporates safety interlocks, fault detection, manual override, and fail-safe operation to minimize unintended barrier activation and improve reliability. The invention provides a modular approach for automated traffic intervention and may be implemented in highways, one-way roads, restricted road sections, toll facilities, and other controlled traffic environments.
