Abstract: The present invention discloses the development of a machine learning system to detect the early warning signs of smartphone addiction along with the academic risk assessment of higher education students. Using behavioral data generated through passive methods such as screen time and frequency of notifications and application use, the developed system uses intelligent classification algorithms to detect students who are likely to become at risk in terms of their academic progress before their academic performance declines significantly. Experiments reveal that an ensemble method performs very well in comparison to the baseline models, including self-reports and baseline models. FIG.1
