MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641108116 A) filed by Srm Institute Of Science And Technology, Kattankulathur- on September 09, 2026, for Intelligent Electrical Panel Hotspot Detection And Preventive Isolation System.
Inventors include Dr. T. M. Thamizh Thentral; Dr. R. Palanisamy; Dr. S. Usha; Dr. K. Selvakumar; Dr. D. Selvabharathi; Debopama Chowdhury; and Ishan Gaur.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: It is associated to an Intelligent Electrical Panel Hotspot Detection and Preventive Isolation System that constantly checks electrical panels like Motor Control Centres (MCC), Power Control Centres (PCC), Distribution Boards (DB) and Automatic Power Factor Correction (APFC) panels for early indications of abnormal heating at busbars, terminations, MCCB/contactor contacts, cable joints and capacitor connections. Causes of electrical fires, risk of unplanned downtime and damage to equipment include the creation of localized hot spots, which is caused by loose terminations, ageing contacts, overloads and phase imbalance, and the fact that conventional protection devices like fuses and circuit breakers are only triggered after a fault current has already formed, by which time thermal damage has already occurred. The invention overcomes this by integrating an array of non-contact infrared thermal sensors with CTs on each phase into a current intelligent microcontroller-based controller which carries out data acquisition, detection of hotspots, trend and pattern analysis, load correlation and fault detection/classification. The decision logic layer receives temperature and current data, compares the behaviour of the R-Y-B phases, analyses temperature rise, owing to load, rate of temperature rise and its historical behaviour, and determines if the condition is Normal, Warning or Critical. The system can notify local alarms, update human machine interface, send alerts remotely via SMS, email, SCADA or IoT channels, record the event with a maintenance recommendation, and where an optional protective isolation path is configured, interface with existing protection devices like relays, PLCs, ACB or MCCB to close a circuit breaker, isolate load or perform an action that brings the panel to a safe state before a potential fault becomes a fire or catastrophic failure. The invention is suitable for any manufacturing plant, process industry, commercial building, data centre or solar or EV charging station and provides early detection, increased reliability, maintenance based on evidence and prolonging equipment lifetime.
