Abstract: 15. ABSTRACT TITLE: INTEGRATED POWERTRAIN AND TYRE-PRESSURE ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE, AND A METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME An integrated energy and emission management system (100) for a motor vehicle (10) is disclosed. A compression-ignition engine (20) is selectively operable in a premixed charge compression ignition low-temperature combustion mode and in a conventional diesel combustion mode under an engine control unit (30). A tyre pressure management sub-system (50) having inflation and deflation valves (55, 56) and pressure sensors (61) is co-ordinated with the engine by a supervisory controller (70) which stores a low-temperature combustion region (203) of the engine speed-load map (200) and computes a commanded inflation pressure as a function of axle load and of the displacement of the engine operating point from a boundary (204) of said region, so that the resulting reduction of road-load energy demand offsets the fuel penalty of the low-temperature mode and displaces or retains the operating point within said region. A warm-up pressure correction, an iso-deflection load correction and a catalyst light-off criterion are further applied, whereby fuel, reagent and tyre consumption are simultaneously reduced while ultra-low oxides of nitrogen and particulate emission are obtained.
