MUMBAI, India, June 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641076138 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on June 19, 2026, for Integrated Microfluidic And Optical Sensing System For Maternal-Fetal Transport Analysis.
Inventors include Sangeetha N; As Rassel; and Soham Das.
The application for the patent was published on June 26, 2026, under issue no. 26/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT INTEGRATED MICROFLUIDIC AND OPTICAL SENSING SYSTEM FOR MATERNAL-FETAL TRANSPORT ANALYSIS An integrated microfluidic and optical sensing system (100) for analyzing maternal-fetal transport comprises a microfluidic platform (110) having at least two adjacent channels (112, 114) configured to represent maternal and fetal fluid flow. An exchange region (120) disposed between the channels (112, 114) comprises an array of adjustable slit-like structures (122) configured to simulate a biological barrier. At least one optical fiber-based sensing unit (130) is embedded along a wall of the microfluidic platform (110), the sensing unit (130) including an exposed region (132) coated with a plasmonic material to enable surface plasmon resonance-based detection. The sensing unit (130) measures spectral responses corresponding to refractive index variations in a flowing analyte. A processing unit (140) determines a transport parameter based on differences in optical response between the maternal and fetal channels (112, 114), enabling characterization of transport behavior across the biological barrier.
