MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641072075 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on June 10, 2026, for Integrated Co-Culture Based Bioprocess For Bioethanol Production From Microalgal Biomass Using Hybrid Hydrolysis Optimization.

Inventors include Ramesh Pathy Manian; and Nivetha Sridhar.

The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.

Abstract: Embodiments herein provide an integrated bioprocess for production of bioethanol from microalgal biomass. The integrated bioprocess includes a co-culture cultivation stage, a biomass harvesting and preparation stage, an ultrasonic pretreatment stage, an acid hydrolysis stage, a neutralization and separation stage, and a fermentation stage. The co-culture cultivation stage is configured to produce carbohydrate-containing microalgal biomass using microalgal strains comprising Chlorella sp. and Chlorococcum sp. The biomass harvesting and preparation stage is configured to recover the cultivated biomass through separation, washing, drying, and size reduction. The ultrasonic pretreatment stage is configured to disrupt microalgal cell walls to facilitate release of intracellular polysaccharides. The acid hydrolysis stage is configured to convert the biomass polysaccharides into fermentable reducing sugars. The neutralization and separation stage is configured to recover a reducing sugar- containing hydrolysate suitable for fermentation. The fermentation stage is configured to convert the hydrolysate into bioethanol using an ethanol-producing microorganism. FIG. 1
