MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202521086272 A) filed by Pandit Deendayal Energy University on September 11, 2025, for Innovative Method For Synthesizing Mesoporous Silica Using Waste Rice Husk.
Inventors include Bhalala Paras Girirajbhai; Dr. Ashish Unnarkat; Jaimin Pandya; Dr. Himanshu Choksi; and Dr. Rajesh Gujar.
The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.
Abstract: Sustainable development goals provide the guideline for bringing synergetic peace between the people and the planet. SDG 12 aims for sustainable consumption and production which in turn addresses waste reduction through reuse, alongside reduction, and recycling. Global waste management is increasingly driven by the goal of waste valorization, converting waste to valuable goods. In this majority of waste comes from agricultural crop reduces of which a major portion is burned in an open environment. The harm caused to flora and fauna by the GHG emissions caused by the open burning can be greatly reduced by providing a better route of converting waste biomass into valuable product. India has large agricultural land producing variety of products round the year in crop cycles. Among the primary crop produce in the country, rice stand second with approx. 1500 lakh metric tonnes in 2024. The rice produce gives rice husk which AS burned as a fuel. Rice husk ash is known to be rich in silica and this can be put to use as a precursor for porous silica synthesis. In this study, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CMTAB) as a surface directing agent is used for the synthesis of mesoporous silica with rice husk ash derived solution as a silica source. The synthesized material was characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis to confirm its structural thermal, morphological, and surface properties.
