MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611093268 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Kanpur on July 31, 2026, for Injectable Self-Healing Hydrogel Adhesive And Method Of Preparation Thereof.
Inventors include Kumar, Ashok; Pandit, Ashiq Hussain; and Tariq, Ubaid.
The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an injectable self-healing hydrogel adhesive comprising a polyaldehyde guar gum-borax complex (PGGB) and hydroxycaffeic acid- functionalized chitosan (HCCS). The aldehyde groups of PGGB react with amino groups of HCCS through reversible Schiff-base linkages to form a dynamic crosslinked hydrogel network exhibiting injectability, self-healing ability, and strong tissue adhesion. The present disclosure also provides a method for preparing the hydrogel by synthesizing PGGB and HCCS separately, followed by mixing under physiological conditions to rapidly form the injectable self-healing adhesive suitable for biomedical and tissue repair applications. The hydrogel exhibits desirable mechanical properties, including a storage modulus of 500-5000 Pa, tensile strength of 50- 250 kPa, compressive strength of 50-1000 kPa and elongation at break of 20-80%. The fabricated hydrogel firmly conforms to irregular wounds forming a dynamic, thermoresponsive network with strong tissue adhesion. The hydrogel is minimally invasive, biocompatible, quickly seals bleeding wounds while preventing its spread to surrounding tissues due to its thermoresponsive reversible nature. The ex vivo and in vivo rat liver and tail hemorrhage models confirm its wound sealing property and hemostasis.
