MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621100228 A) filed by Thakur College Of Engineering & Technology on August 19, 2026, for Improving Intermediate Roll Performance And Service Life With Tungsten Carbide–cobalt Coating Applied For Cold Rolling Process Used In Heavy Steel Industry.

Inventor includes Dr. Sajjan Kumar Lal.

The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.

Abstract: In the cold rolling process for sheet metal, Intermediate rolls are typically produced from EN19 steel. Cold rolling of steel sheet is a severe task for steel rolls, and wears out rolls quickly. Coatings increase the working life of EN19 Intermediate rolls under these severe working conditions. This study presents an innovative study to explore the effectiveness of coatings for EN19 steel intermediate rolls. In this study, comparative sliding wear tests were performed to study the effectiveness of Tungsten Carbide coatings. Its purpose was to study the interactions that the coatings possess with the EN19 steel. Various characterization methods like, hardness, surface roughness and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized for the characterization of the coatings. The wear tests were performed at normal working conditions to enhance the working life of the Intermediate rolls through the coatings. Results showed that the hardness and wear resistance of the Tungsten Carbide coating was greater in comparison to EN19 base material of intermediate roll. Hard Chrome provides 15.19 times more life compared to EN19 intermediate roll. Enhanced durability of EN19 intermediate rolls can be achieved by applying Tungsten Carbide coating.
