Abstract: The present work proposes a concept to increase the residual compression performance of the quad-weave composite laminates using graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) nano fillers. The intra-ply quad-weave composite laminate containing diolen, fiberglass, aramid and carbon fibres was fabricated using the vacuum bagging method with a fibre-to-resin weight ratio of 1:1. GNPs were added at concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 3% by weight to the resin, and a laminate without GNP was also fabricated. The fabricated laminates were subjected to ballistic impact using the gas gun setup with a 9 mm diameter hemispherical projectile made of EN 8 steel, fired at a velocity of 100 m/s. Post-impact, the laminates were subjected to in-plane compression testing according to ASTM D7137/D7137M. Compared with the baseline laminate without GNP, the addition of 1%, 2%, and 3% GNP increased the peak load under compression by approximately 4%, 33%, and 42%, respectively. The proposed concept shows the potential of GNP addition to improve the load-carrying capacity of the quad-weave composite laminate, with 3 wt.% GNP providing the highest improvement among the proposed configurations.
