MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641124649 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on October 15, 2026, for Immobilized Bacterial Composite Bead And Method For Recovering Iron And Copper From Waste Circuit Boards.
Inventors include Anand Prem Rajan; and Harshan K.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT IMMOBILIZED BACTERIAL COMPOSITE BEAD AND METHOD FOR RECOVERING IRON AND COPPER FROM WASTE CIRCUIT BOARDS The present disclosure relates to an immobilized bacterial bead (100) for uptake of metal ions. The bead (100) comprises a sodium alginate matrix (102) crosslinked with calcium ions (104) and Bacillus cereus cells (106) entrapped within the sodium alginate matrix (102). Pulverized coir pith (108) and pulverized banana peel powder (110) are dispersed within the sodium alginate matrix (102) to form a microbial-lignocellulosic composite matrix (112) in which the Bacillus cereus cells (106) are immobilized. The bead (100) retains viable Bacillus cereus cells (106) and progressively accumulates iron ions (116) and copper ions (118) from a waste printed circuit board (WPCB)-derived metal-containing medium in contact with the bead (100). A method includes calcium chloride crosslinking to form the beads (100), contacting the beads (100) with WPCB powder broth, and extracting retained metals. (Fig. 1)
