MUMBAI, India, July 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641088372 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai on July 20, 2026, for Image-Based Inscription Restoration And Recognition System.

Inventors include Subbulakshmi. T; Arun Santhosh R A; and Rahul S.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: A system (102) and a method (50s0) for restoration and recognition of inscriptions is disclosed. The system captures images of an inscription-bearing surface, processes captured images to reduce noise and enhance glyph visibility. The system reconstructs missing or degraded portions of glyphs in preprocessed images using generative machine-learning model trained on script-specific character dataset and recognizes textual content from reconstructed images using character recognition engine trained on said script-specific character dataset. Further, the system translates recognized textual content into target representations and automatically tunes operational parameters of preprocessing unit, restoration unit, and recognition unit using metaheuristic optimization mechanism. The system renders reconstructed images, recognized textual content, and translated output, and archives captured images, reconstructed images, recognized textual content, translated output, and associated metadata in searchable form.
