Abstract: A hydrogen cylinder mounting system (10) for a heavy commercial vehicle (12) is provided herein. A high-strength, crash-resistant welded frame (18) is positioned behind a cabin (14) of the vehicle. A plurality of hydrogen cylinders (20) is oriented horizontally and stacked vertically within the frame. A pair of main mounting brackets (28) mounts the frame to a chassis frame (16), and a pair of supporting cross members (30) resists lateral movement of the frame. Sheet metal side covers (32) on both sides of the frame protect the cylinders from side collision. Impact-absorbing and load-distributing members (34) between the side covers and the cylinders are integrated into the frame and distribute an impact load applied to a side cover uniformly across the frame, such that the load is not concentrated at a single point on any cylinder.
