MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631110635 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Indian School Of on September 15, 2026, for Hybrid Water-Assisted And Locally Shielded (hwals) Laser Welding Apparatus And Method For Advanced Metallic Materials.
Inventors include Abhijeet Sethi; Raushan Kumar; Manchu Mohan Krishna Sai; and Amitava Mandal.
The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: A hybrid laser welding apparatus (100) comprises a liquid-tight, optically transparent enclosure (200) retaining a liquid cooling medium (500), a clamping fixture (300) holding a metallic workpiece (400) with its upper surface (402) submerged, a laser access window (700) over a top aperture (206), a fibre laser delivery head (900) outside the enclosure (200) directing a laser beam (902) through the window (700) towards a weld zone (404), an inert gas nozzle (600) whose discharge outlet (602) discharges an inert gas jet that locally displaces the liquid cooling medium (500) from an interaction region and forms an inert-gas-filled dry cavity (1100) over the weld zone (404), a motion arrangement (1000) advancing the weld zone (404) along a weld trajectory, and a vapour extraction assembly (800) withdrawing metal vapour and plasma plume (1300) through an exhaust outlet (210). The laser beam (902) reaches the weld zone (404) through the dry cavity (1100) without traversing the liquid cooling medium (500), so that the molten pool is shielded from the atmosphere by the inert gas while the surrounding liquid cooling medium (500) extracts heat from the workpiece (400), whereby oxidation and heat-affected zone width are reduced simultaneously.
