Abstract: HYBRID POLYMER NANOCOMPOSITES FOR NUCLEAR RADIATION SHIELDING ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a hybrid polymer nanocomposite for nuclear radiation shielding. The nanocomposite comprises a polymer matrix having hafnium oxide (HfO2) and boron carbide (B4C) nanoparticles dispersed therein. The combined ceramic content may be present in a range of 5 wt.% to 30 wt.% of the nanocomposite, with the HfO2 and B4C nanoparticles being present, in an embodiment, in substantially equal proportions by weight. The polymer matrix may comprise epoxy resin. Exemplary compositions include epoxy:HfO2:B4C weight proportions of 95:2.5:2.5, 90:5:5, 80:10:10 and 70:15:15. The nanocomposite exhibits radiation-shielding characteristics against gamma radiation and neutrons, with the ceramic loading influencing both shielding and mechanical performance. The invention further provides a method of preparing the hybrid polymer nanocomposite by incorporating and dispersing HfO2 and B4C nanoparticles within the polymer matrix and forming the resulting composition into the nanocomposite.
