MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611110388 A) filed by Chandigarh University on September 14, 2026, for Hybrid Glare-Based Composite Retrofit System For Aircraft Fuselage Fatigue Life Extension.
Inventors include Frank Bell; Michael J Ngano; Christian David; and Melkiad Boniface.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: The invention relates to aircraft structural repair using a fiber-metal laminate retrofit. A GLARE 3B patch (103) comprising alternating aluminum layers (101) and glass-fiber/epoxy layers (102) is adhesively bonded to a metallic fuselage skin (104) through an adhesive bonding interface (105). Installation includes surface preparation, primer application where used, adhesive deposition, positioning, clamping and curing at ambient or moderately elevated temperature, avoiding autoclave processing. During cyclic or pressurization loading, the aluminum layers provide stiffness and load carrying capability while the glass-fiber/epoxy layers’ bridge and arrest a fatigue crack (106), distributing load over the reinforced region and improving fatigue and buckling resistance. The laminate may employ three aluminum layers and two glass-fiber/epoxy layers with [0/90] fiber orientation and a total thickness of 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm. The system is suitable for retrofit of metallic aircraft fuselage panels while maintaining a smooth external contour.
