Abstract: The present invention relates to a hybrid coagulation-bioflocculation process for removal of microplastics from an aqueous medium using a chemical coagulant in combination with a Psidium guajava derived bioflocculant (PG-BF). PG-BF is synthesized from Psidium guajava leaves by chemical modification with ferric chloride and sodium borohydride, followed by filtration, washing and drying (100). In the treatment process, a chemical coagulant, such as polyaluminium chloride, is added to microplastic-containing water and subjected to rapid mixing to induce charge neutralization (230), followed by addition of PG-BF and slow mixing to promote polymer bridging and floc growth (240), and subsequent sedimentation (250) and separation of treated water (260). The hybrid process achieves enhanced removal of polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics of size less than 75 micrometres as compared to the chemical coagulant used alone, while reducing coagulant dosage and providing a biodegradable, low-toxicity and environmentally sustainable alternative to synthetic polymeric flocculants.
