MUMBAI, India, Oct. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621101213 A) filed by Parul University Parul Institute Of Engineering And Technology on August 21, 2026, for Hybrid Airfoil Flow Control System With Boundary Layer Suction And Gurney Flap.

Inventors include Nishikant Singh; Dr. Balaji K; Dr. Swapnil M Parikh; Dr. Mehulkumar Gor; Saranya S; and Dr. Robinson S.

The application for the patent was published on October 09, 2026, under issue no. 41/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT A hybrid active-passive flow control system integrates an active boundary layer control mechanism, applying suction or injection at 50% to 70% of the chord length, with a passive Gurney flap mounted perpendicularly at the trailing edge pressure surface. The active mechanism removes low-momentum boundary layer fluid to maintain attached flow, while the Gurney flap generates counter-rotating vortical structures to enhance circulation. Numerical evaluation using Reynolds- Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-omega SST modeling shows the hybrid configuration achieves a 45% lift coefficient improvement and a 14% stall angle increase over a baseline airfoil, yielding lift enhancement 124% higher than Co-Flow Jet configurations. The invention applies to aircraft wings, wind turbine blades, UAVs, helicopter rotors, and compressor blades under subsonic and transonic conditions.
