Abstract: The invention concerns high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) machines. These machines have rolls that are provided with studs. In order to monitor the condition of the studs during operation of such a machine to detect wear of studs, cracking of studs, missing studs, and/or breakage of studs, a radar system (44a) is provided on a linear drive (46a). The radar system (44a) is arranged to emit a radar beam onto an outermost surface of the roll (14) and to produce a radar system output indicative of a distance between the radar system and the outermost surface of the roll. The HPGR machine further comprises a monitoring system comprising processing means connected to the radar system and configured to analyse the radar system output and determine a condition of the outermost surface of the roll.
