Abstract: Disclosed is a household smart recycling apparatus comprising a waste receiving station having a waste receiving chamber for receiving a household waste item. A sensor arrangement is coupled with the waste receiving chamber and generates detection data upon receipt of the household waste item. An imaging arrangement is positioned relative to the waste receiving chamber and captures image data of the household waste item. An output interface presents a handling output to a user. A controller is operatively connected to the sensor arrangement, the imaging arrangement, and the output interface. The controller receives the detection data, causes the imaging arrangement to capture the image data, determines a waste category from the image data, and provides the handling output based on the waste category.
