Abstract: Provided is a hot rolling method by which a hot-rolled coil having a small number of defects can be obtained. In the hot rolling method, a steel slab 1 is heated in a heating furnace and then hot-rolled. In a temperature range T in which the temperature of the steel slab 1 in the heating furnace is between 950 °C and 1,150 °C (both inclusive), when heating the steel slab 1 having a component composition in which the ? phase rate at 1,050 °C, which is the median value of the temperature range T, is 20 mol% or less, when using a heating furnace in which the distance between the plurality of skids 2 supporting the steel slab 1 exceeds 1.1 m, the average oxygen concentration in the heating furnace in the temperature range T is 5.0 vol% or less.
